Introducing the AMA (NSW) Essential Guide to a Successful Practice

AMA (NSW), with major sponsors TressCox, are proud to present the AMA (NSW) Essential Guide to a Successful Practice.

The Essential Guide to a Successful Practice is for those setting up a medical practice for the first time or after a break and those already in private practice who want to further enhance their practice. Others involved in managing a practice – for example, practice managers, health professionals and administrative staff – will also find it useful. Please note the guide is available to non-members at an increased fee.

This guide is the result of the accrued wisdom of medical practitioners, experienced administrators, TressCox Lawyers and an experienced AMA (NSW) team who have worked on these complex issues for many years. Their collective knowledge has been distilled into a user-oriented guide that takes you through crucial information and refers you to further resources.

This publication reflects the supportive role that AMA (NSW) provides to all its members, the quality of that support, and our commitment to each member.

What does it cover?

Part 1 covers the first steps you need to take in order to build a successful practice. It guides you through medical registration, decision-making about the type of practice you will have, and outlines the standards you should follow in setting up your rooms.

Part 2 outlines the systems and protocols that will enable you to run a safe and efficient practice. It describes the clinical protocols you should follow to comply with health and safety legislation and looks at office systems to help you maintain legally complying medical records. It also covers effective communication systems for appointments, consultations and complaints.

Once you have somewhere to practise and have appropriate protocols and systems in place, you are ready to provide services and generate your income. Part 3 describes how you can work effectively with key health system processes. It gives practical advice on how to get provider and prescriber numbers, and describes efficient systems for billing patients, lodging Medicare claims and getting paid.

Part 4 continues a focus on finances, but challenges you to think of your medical practice as a business. It outlines a number of risks (for example, insurance) and opportunities (for example, marketing), and draws attention to important legislation with which you must comply.

Part 5 covers one of the most important parts of any successful practice: your people. It gives an overview of your obligations as an employer, and outlines a number of opportunities to help you hire the best staff and, in turn, get the very best from them.

Templates and checklist

Eighteen templates are included to support you in managing your office and human resource systems. They have been tested in real practice situations and you can copy and use them to support your own business.

The Essential Guide to a Successful Practice also includes a valuable checklist for setting up a practice. This extensive list covers everything from medical registration through to stationery needs. This will be invaluable for anyone about to start in private practice, but can also be used by those who want to run a more successful business, and to be more responsive to patient and staff needs.

Finally, a list of contacts gives details of providers and professionals who can support you in running a successful practice.
