April 23, 2015AMA (NSW) President, Dr Saxon Smith, says he’s very happy with today’s report showing alcohol-fuelled violence is down in Kings Cross and hasn’t been spilling into neighbouring areas.
“The Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research figures are undeniable proof that the last drinks and lock-out laws AMA (NSW) has advocated for have worked.
“They have worked better than anyone expected and today’s report also shows violence is not spreading into the rest of Sydney.
“A one-third drop in assaults in Kings Cross and a 40 per cent drop in the Sydney CBD are results that people, who campaigned for the change to pub and club opening hours, should be proud of,” Dr Smith said.
“This is a great result for the people of Sydney, who now have safer streets, as well as our emergency services and hospitals.
“NSW Police and inner city hospitals have already reported positive changes when it comes to alcohol-fuelled violence.
“This means fewer resources in hospitals are being taken up treating people wounded in alcohol-fuelled attacks and more can be done to help people with serious illness and injury from other causes.
“I am very proud AMA (NSW) has been such a strong proponent of the lockout and last drinks laws.
“This report provides excellent evidence for the Government when it comes time to review the effectiveness of these laws,” Dr Smith said.
