On the wild side
November 9, 2017Doctors’ Alliance welcomes the NSW Government’s commitment to doctors-in-training health and wellbeing
November 18, 2017AMA (NSW) President, Prof Brad Frankum, says he is delighted with the news that the yes vote was so strong for marriage equality.
“AMA (NSW) has been campaigning in favour of marriage equality and today’s result is excellent.
“The vote itself may have been a flawed process and an invitation to make LGBTIQ Australians the subject of unwanted national debate but the results are clear.
“There is no longer any excuse for Federal politicians to continue to delay this issue.
“It’s now time for Canberra to act decisively and provide Australians with what they have clearly declared they want.
“This is not a time for bills to be debated that would allow for increased discrimination against LGBTIQ people.
“The unambiguous result of the postal vote is for marriage equality, which means it’s a push directly from Australians for less discrimination.
“We cannot afford to let politicians who remain opposed to marriage equality to attempt to muddy the waters on what is a clear statement from the people,” Prof Frankum said.
“Today, I am very proud to be President of AMA (NSW) and I’m proud of doctors and medical students everywhere.
“I also want to thank the past presidents of the Federal AMA, going back almost 20 years, who helped us campaign on this issue.
“Profs Kerryn Phelps and Brian Owler, as well as, Drs Steve Hambleton, Bill Glasson, Mukesh Haikerwal, Andrew Pesce, and David Brand all stood with us and said ‘Marriage equality is a health issue’.
“The adverse impacts of discrimination on people’s health are very clear.
“We need to do everything we can to reduce discrimination and promote people’s health,” Prof Frankum said.
