September 19, 2017AMA (NSW) President, Professor Brad Frankum is encouraging all Australians to not only ask the question on 14 September, but to be prepared to listen.
“It’s a simple question, but not always a simple answer. If someone is willing to talk to you it’s important to listen without judgement, take their feelings seriously and don’t rush them.
“And if the person has been feeling down for a few weeks, it’s a good idea to encourage them to talk to a health professional.
“Many people feel uncomfortable talking about mental health, because they are afraid of the stigma associated with mental illness.
“However, mental illness doesn’t discriminate. It can affect anyone, at any point in their lives – even doctors.
“In the last 12 months, the medical profession has witnessed a number of doctor suicides. It’s a tragic reminder that we all need to take better care of our friends, family and colleagues and remove the barriers that exist that prevent people from seeking help.
“If you feel someone is at risk, please contact a crisis intervention service as soon as possible. Lifeline offers 24/7 crisis support on 13 11 14.”
