April 21, 2022Injured workers deserve timely access to care: AMA (NSW)
April 23, 2022Restrictions across NSW are easing further today, but AMA (NSW) strongly recommends people wear a mask in healthcare settings.
“Please be considerate of others in medical facilities,” said AMA (NSW) Vice President, Dr Andrew Zuschmann. “Many people attending doctors’ offices, hospitals, or aged care settings have underlying conditions that make them more susceptible to developing serious COVID-19 symptoms.”
The advice comes as COVID restrictions ease in NSW and Victoria. Household contacts in both states will no longer be required to isolate for seven days; however, they must undertake daily rapid antigen tests before leaving the home and wear a mask.
Household contacts are not permitted to visit aged care, hospitals, disability, and correction facilities and should avoid contact with immunocompromised people.
“Avoiding high-risk settings remains paramount for household contacts. And for anyone else visiting their doctor, wearing a mask is no-brainer. It protects you and it can protect the pregnant woman in the waiting room, or the elderly grandfather you pass in the hall. It also protects your doctor and their staff members so they can continue to offer vital healthcare services to the community.”
Dr Zuschmann added that the easing of COVID rules does not mean we are through the pandemic.
“There will continue to be high levels of transmission in the community and unfortunately, we expect there will be more COVID deaths.
“As we move into winter and the flu season it’s important that people look out for each other, particularly vulnerable residents.
“Throughout the pandemic, Australians have demonstrated a willingness to protect themselves and their community by following health rules. Continuing to wear a mask, maintaining physical distance in public and following rules around hand hygiene continue to be important,” Dr Zuschmann said.
