AMA (NSW) supports doctors-in-training through advocacy for improved working conditions in hospitals and individual assistance. Over the years, we have successfully advocated for a safe working hours policy, 14 weeks paid parental leave for all new parents, a JMO Wellbeing plan, and more. We have also assisted hundreds of doctors-in-training with enquiries such as pay, annual leave, registration and career advice.

Looking after doctors-in-training

  • AMA’s annual Hospital Health Check survey serves as a platform for advocacy for improved working conditions for doctors-in-training.

  • AMA (NSW)’s Gender Equity Ministerial Committee is working toward gender equity in medicine and looking at issues such as leadership opportunities, flexible and part-time training and representation in decision-making roles.

  • AMA’s Doctors-in-Training Committee has been at the forefront of advocacy around specialty training exam fees and the cost of medical training.

  • Lobbying for improved education entitlements.

  • Successfully lobbied against the wage freeze.

  • Advocacy throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, including elective surgery issues, contracts, medical indemnity, PPE, hospital access issues, priority vaccination for healthcare workers and their staff members and more.

  • The AMA has been at the forefront of calling for changes mandatory reporting requirements to ensure doctors are not discouraged from seeking medical treatment.

  • Reform of GP training employment arrangements

  • The AMA Specialist Training Experience Health Check provides a comparison of the speciality training experience between different specialty training pathways and identifies areas of excellent experience as well areas for improvement.

Looking after you

  • By providing opportunities to become involved in our Doctor-in-Training Committee and be at the forefront of policy change that makes a difference for doctors-in-training.

  • We offer a Careers Service, which provides ongoing support throughout your career, career coaching, interview techniques, CV development and access to the Specialist Training Career Pathways Guide.

  • Our Workplace Relations team provides individual assistance with pay, leave, rostering, overtime, registration, and more.

  • We offer leadership and media training opportunities to doctors-in-training looking to take part in system-wide advocacy.

  • We provide resources on a huge range of topics to help you understand your Award conditions, as well as issues such as bullying and where to find help and support.

  • AMA (NSW) operates a Doctors for Colleagues registry to assist doctors looking for general practitioner. This is especially useful for doctors-in-training who may be on rotation and away from their usual treating doctor.

Doctors-in-Training Committee

AMA (NSW)’s Doctors-in-Training Committee (DITC) meets regularly to discuss issues affecting NSW DITS.
