Statement from AMA (NSW) president Dr Kathryn Austin
February 12, 2025Tropical Cyclone Alfred is yet to make landfall, but is already impacting large areas of northern NSW.
AMA (NSW) has spoken with the Healthy North Coast PHN and we have agreed to share messaging to ensure coverage across the different parts of the health system.
The PHN has specifically reminded practices of the value of continuing to provide services, if possible, and has referenced the We are Open program. This program supports general practices, Aboriginal Medical Services and pharmacies in extending their opening hours at short notice.
It has also encouraged doctors to update their details with the National Health Services Directory.
AMA (NSW) has spoken with the Ministry of Health regarding postponement of non-urgent surgery and referral hospital arrangements.
We appreciated the assurances and responsiveness from the Ministry and affected local health districts.
The AMA (NSW) Workplace Relations team is available to assist members in understanding their rights and obligations as an employer and any staffing or medico legal issues that may arise, such as:
- What do I need to do if I have to close the practice?
- What if my staff can’t get to work due to the flooding?
- Can I stand down my employees if I have to close the practice?
Please contact the AMA (NSW) Workplace Relations team at workplace@amansw.com.au or on (02) 9439 8822.
Natural disasters, including extreme weather events, present challenging times for our community so it is important to reach out and get the support you need.
The Doctors Health Advisory Service provides a free confidential counselling service. The Medical Benevolent Association of NSW also provides counselling and short-term financial assistance.
We will continue to provide updates over the next few days. Please stay safe.
