October 27, 2015AMA (NSW) President: “cooking” sunscreen cuts protection by up to 40%
November 28, 2015With Sydney facing its hottest November day since 1982 and much of NSW in a heatwave, AMA (NSW) is reminding people to stay hydrated and keep cool.
“Heatwaves like the one we’re seeing today can cause serious harm to people through heatstroke and dehydration.
“Wherever you are today, make sure you drink enough water and try and stay as cool as possible,” AMA (NSW) President, Dr Saxon Smith, said.
“On days like today, try and avoid strenuous activity, avoid being outside between 11am and 5pm if you can, and ensure children and elderly friend and relatives are ok.
“It’s especially important for people with chronic health conditions to be careful during heatwaves.
“You can find more information about heatwave preparedness at the NSW Health site on its Beat the Heat page,” Dr Smith said.
“Of course, I wouldn’t be a dermatologist if I didn’t also remind people to be sun safe.
“If you’re headed for a swim or are out and about, make sure you wear sunscreen, sunglasses, protective clothing, a hat, and avoid being outside during peak UV times.
“Today, that’s pretty much whenever the sun is out but Australians should be wearing sunscreen every day.
“As the Cancer Council reminded us just this week, all UV exposure adds up and increases your lifetime risk of developing skin cancer,” Dr Smith said.
“It looks like we’re in for a hot summer, so a spring day like today is a good reminder to make sure you’re prepared for summer conditions,” Dr Smith said.
