AMA (NSW) has welcomed the government’s introduction of the Conversion Practices Ban Bill 2024 into NSW Parliament.
AMA (NSW) President Dr Michael Bonning said “The AMA enacted policy in 2021 opposing gay conversion therapy, noting that these practices are a blatant example of the discrimination faced by LGBTQIA+ people in Australia and have no place in our society.”
“The AMA has been consulted on this bill which represents a compassionate and balanced approach to ensuring suitable clinical relationships while also protecting individuals.”
“AMA (NSW) urges all parties to support the bill. New South Wales is and should remain a place of acceptance and support where no member of any community feels judged.” Dr Bonning said.
“We have seen the direct harms caused in terms of mental health and suicide arising from gay conversion therapy and call on parliament to act in a respectful manner and pass this legislation.”
