AMA (NSW) welcomes the passing of the Human Tissue Amendment Private Members Bill and commends the Hon. Greg Piper, the government and the opposition for their support of the bill.
AMA (NSW) President Dr Michael Bonning said “The bill is a testament to the leadership shown by Mr Piper who raised this as a Private Members Bill. The Act will assist in ensuring where the decision has been made that a patient is suitable to be an organ donor, minor medical procedures can be undertaken to safeguard the organs.”
Dr Bonning said “Organ donation is the greatest gift one person can give another. Our expert transplant doctors have shown that small interventions can make a huge difference in ensuring the transplant has the greatest chance of success.
“The AMA has been pleased to provide extensive advice on the bill and commended Hon. Greg Piper, Health Minister Ryan Park and Shadow Health Minister Matt Kean for the open and considered way in which they had engaged on improving the Bill.’’ Dr Bonning said.
