AMA (NSW) welcomes vaccine boosters as State continues to open up
October 28, 2021NSW healthcare workers deserve full marks for performance under pressure: AMA (NSW)
November 5, 2021A short pause on the loosening of restrictions for unvaccinated residents is the right move, said AMA (NSW) President, Dr Danielle McMullen.
“Delaying freedoms for unvaccinated residents may be the push some people need to get their first jab – and that’s really important,” Dr McMullen said.
“We’re all really encouraged by the high number of people getting vaccinated and the relatively low number of new cases, but this isn’t the time for NSW to rest on its laurels.
“We’re still in this really critical period where COVID is circulating in the community whilst people are being more social and travelling to regional NSW, as well as interstate and internationally.
“We welcome this pause. It will give the system a chance to evaluate how the changes that have been made to date are impacting the wider community.
“We know vaccinations give people the best chance at avoiding hospitalisation or even death from COVID, so anything we can do to protect them as we build to higher levels of vaccination will be beneficial.
“We recognise that for some NSW residents, not getting vaccinated isn’t a choice. This is why it is especially important to have as high a vaccination rate in the community as possible.
“We’re very pleased that the Premier is balancing the risks of opening up with sensible measures, such as mask wearing, to keep COVID transmission levels down,” Dr McMullen said.
