AMA (NSW) would like to congratulate members Professor Georgina Long and Professor Richard Scolyer for receiving the joint honour of being named Australians of the Year.
“Professor Long and Professor Scolyer embody the characteristics that give Australian doctors a world leading reputation.” AMA (NSW) President Dr Michael Bonning said today.
“Innovative, determined and compassionate, the two in their hard work have created life saving outcomes for thousands of Australians and millions around the world.”
Dr Bonning noted “The primary reason for entering medicine is to make a difference and it is what thousands of doctors pour themselves into every day.“
“To achieve this momentous breakthrough and change the path of humankind is testament to the skill, training and hard work of Professors Long and Scolyer. Their achievement makes us proud to be Australian doctors.”
“Of particular note is the bravery of Professor Scolyer, who is allowing himself to be the subject of clinical testing. This is the ultimate commitment to medicine and one his colleagues in the medical fraternity passionately hope reaps positive rewards.”
AMA (NSW) supports Professor Long’s call to make melanoma prevention a national health priority, with particular pleas to advertisers and social media influencers to “stop glamorising, tanning, or using it to sell or advertise or entertain.”
“Australians for too long have been encouraged to risk their lives for fashion.” Dr Bonning said “Prevention is the best form of healthcare.”
“We are grateful that Professors Long and Scolyer have the platform of Australian of the Year to impart this important message.”
“We congratulate all doctors who have been honoured today and thank them for all they contribute to giving Australians a better standard of life.” Dr Bonning said.
