September 7, 2016AMA (NSW) President, Prof Brad Frankum, says the jailing of John Kearsley for indecent assault is a reminder to everyone of the need for zero tolerance on this kind of behaviour.
“A lot has been said about bullying and sexual harassment in medicine but it’s especially heinous when it is committed against junior doctors by senior doctors.
“Rightfully, the profession has responded by rejecting this kind of behaviour and implemented a plan to work towards a cultural change.
“This is a reminder that the culture is not fixed yet and that we need to show zero tolerance for anything like this.
“This is especially the case once this sort of behaviour results in indecent or sexual assault.
“These are crimes, they cannot be excused, and people need to be held accountable for their actions,” Prof Frankum said.
“The victim impact statement in the John Kearsley case has already been well reported but it’s worth remembering the long-term effects these crimes have on people.
“John Kearsley should have been a mentor to the woman he indecently assaulted – she was a doctor-in-training.
“Instead, he drugged and attacked her, and his crime has left a profound, negative mark on her life.
“It is terrible that this happened but I am glad that the medical profession has united against this,” Prof Frankum said.
