AMA (NSW) President says don’t let your sunscreen burn out this summer
January 1, 2015AMA (NSW) and ASMOF NSW welcome new interns to the medical profession
January 19, 2015AMA (NSW) is echoing NSW Heath’s warning against having any sort of medical procedure performed by unregistered practitioners.
“It’s very concerning that unregistered practitioners are performing medical procedures that should only be performed by doctors or nurses in teams supported by doctors.
“It’s of additional concern when it comes to things like Botox injections and cosmetic surgery on people’s faces.
“Training is not just necessary for the procedure itself but also the storage of Botox – if it is not stored properly, it loses effectiveness,” AMA (NSW) President, Dr Saxon Smith, said.
“If you receive a medical procedure from an improperly trained person, it will increase the risk that you will have a poor outcome.
“When it comes to cosmetic surgery performed by an unregistered practitioner, it is not worth risking your face over,” Dr Smith said.
“If you plan to undergo a cosmetic procedure it is worth checking that the person administering the treatment is registered to do so.
“Your family doctor is a good starting point and the AHPRA website has a list of all registered medical practitioners in NSW,” Dr Smith said.
The AHPRA register of practitioners can be found here.
If you are concerned you may have been treated by an unregistered practitioner, please contact the Health Care Complaints Commission on 1800 043 159.
