March 12, 2018AMA (NSW) President, Prof Brad Frankum, says the State Government’s offer to provide free flu vaccinations to children under five is a welcome development.
“Given the bad flu season we had in 2017, taking steps to increase rates of immunisation for people most vulnerable to its worst complications is a smart move by the Government.
“Children and the elderly are more likely to suffer serious harm from the flu and it’s important that they get the best protection available.
“Older Australians can already access the flu vaccine for free under the National Immunisation Program.
“Similarly, the National Immunisation Program funds free flu vaccines to pregnant women to provide protection to both themselves and their babies.
“The State Government is doing its bit to close a gap for children under five,” Prof Frankum said.
“Immunisation, good coughing etiquette, and hand hygiene are our best defences against the spread of the flu.
“It is a very contagious virus that mutates rapidly, so the vaccine for it isn’t always as effective as immunisations for other infectious diseases.
“However, as demonstrated last year, the flu and its complications can be fatal and that means we all need to do our part to stop its spread.
“Part of that is making sure you and your children are immunised and ready next time flu season comes around,” Prof Frankum said.
