October 6, 2023AMA (NSW) President Dr Michael Bonning said the NSW Government’s $6.8 million investment to target the illegal vape industry is a much-needed boost.
“It’s impossible to combat vaping without tackling the widespread black market.” Dr Bonning said. “No matter what regulations are introduced, they mean nothing to illegal operators. So we welcome additional funds to reduce the number of vapes illegally making their way onto our streets.”
The Minns government is dedicating $4.3 million dollars over the next three years to improve compliance and enforcement, to help ensure retailers don’t break the law.
Another $2.5 million will be spent over 12 months to expand services to assist young people in giving up vaping.
“Vape manufacturers are knowingly and actively creating products that are attractive and addictive to young people.
“Vaping has lifelong consequences for an individual’s health, particularly if they begin vaping at an early age. Products sold on the black market make vaping even more dangerous, with products containing questionable ingredients and unregulated levels of tobacco.
“The black market is creating the pathway for another generation to be hooked on nicotine, or worse. We commend the Minns government for funding proper enforcement activity.” Dr Bonning said.
