Alcohol-fuelled violence drops in Kings Cross and isn’t spreading elsewhere
April 16, 2015Half of Australians are still getting sunburnt despite cancer risk
April 28, 2015AMA (NSW) President, Dr Saxon Smith, says the NSW Auditor-General’s report on hospital stays shows good examples of the hard work of doctors and hospital staff.
“There is a lot of talk in political circles at the moment about the need for more efficient healthcare.
“Today’s Auditor-General’s report shows doctors, nurses, and allied health staff are working very hard to make sure the care they offer is both high quality and more efficient.
“Shorter hospital stays should not be mistaken as a reduction in the level of care patients are receiving.
“It is, in fact, an example of how better quality of care and improved surgical methods are allowing more patients to leave hospital more quickly,” Dr Smith said.
“Even though this report shows NSW hospitals provide good patient care at the same time as being very efficient, we still need a certain level of resources for this to continue.
“Cuts to the health budget by the Federal Government need to be rectified as soon as possible.
“At the moment, a significant amount of Federal Funding stops in 2017 and this means that planning for the future of NSW healthcare is completely impossible.
“To continue to improve healthcare in terms of quality and efficiency in NSW, we need certainty of funding and that is something we do not have right now,” Dr Smith said.
